The way to SOLE: death anxiety from a designer’s point of view - A digital community platform to reduce death anxiety

Abstract · I chose researching death anxiety as an emotion in modern society. My goal was to understand how death anxiety can make an impact in people’s lives and what the direct or indirect consequences of this emotion are in our daily life. I was working with in-depth interviews and some immensely rich background literature helped me solve the puzzles: what our true connection with death is and how death as a fact has changed in the last centuries in people's lives. Simultaneously, I tried to find a solution to decrease negative emotions towards the fact of our own mortality, so as to live life as complete as we can. The theoretical research serves also as a basis for an online community platform where people can easily connect through experiencing their mortality, with the help of the tools of storytelling, acquired in my motion design studies.

Comparison of Fanni Gyarmati and Alaine Polcz’s Grief Narratives

Abstract · This paper compares the grief narratives of two widows, Fanni Gyarmati and Alaine Polcz, applying narrative psychological content analysis. The differences between the narratives reflect the differences between the two grieving processes: Alaine Polcz's grieving process is rather normative, while Fanni Gyarmati's case shows the characteristics of traumatic grief. Alaine Polcz demonstrated higher rates of narrative features related to agency, self-references, we-references, and cognitive verbs, all reflecting psychological constructs connected to more adaptive coping. Narrative features of negative evaluations and negative emotions were more common in Fanni Gyarmati's story. The proportion of negative character functions was also higher in her case. Based on the results, the two grieving processes are different, and the differences can be demonstrated through narrative psychological content analysis.
