Abstract · A small village in Nógrád County of 1,800 people lies at the center of my recorded thoughts. The community is highly isolated and by now the societal structure is nearly ingrained, just as it is in most of the villages typical of the county. With regard to ethnicity, people of Palóc origin live in the community with an insignificant Roma population. In general it can be said that time stands still in the village; some are of the opinion that backward thinking and social behaviour remain characteristic of the community. In respect to the care of the dying, in parallel with the societal care system, modern forms of assisted care and service have appeared.
Abstract · For many people the topic of cremation is an issue to avoid: they steer clear of the cluster of buildings on the outskirts of the city - the function of which everyone knows. There are many others, however, who type in those search words on the largest file-sharing site that result in a list of videos claiming to show the details of cremations. The viewership of those videos can be up to even the hundreds of thousands. In my article I focus on the popularity of the content available for the lay person, and on the psychological background of breaking a taboo which previously seemed unshakable. I endeavour to explore the reasons for the crematorium open days being well attended, and the motivation and prior knowledge of attendees after visiting a few open days and putting questions to my fellow visitors in spontaneous communication situations; and observing their reactions, attitudes and their possible involvement.
Abstract · In order to raise awareness effectively, there are two hindering factors that are to be overcome: distance and time. Online communication enables a rapid exchange of information and the storage of data in large volumes for a long time, as a result of increasing storage spaces. Physical distance loses its importance in this virtual space; the World Wide Web is able to connect countless sources of information along an association thread. The Hungarian Hospice Palliative Association also uses online communication as a medium in order to reach its goals, and owns two functioning websites. In 2016, we thought that both needed an update in order to adjust to the constant improvement of technical environment. The new website of the online journal Kharon Thanatology Review was completed in September 2016, and the website of the Associationis expected to be ready by springtime 2017. In this short study, I would like to introduce the desired purposes of our online transformation and the assessment of the five-month period since the debut of the new Kharon website.
