Are obituaries acceptable on social media?

Abstract · Obituaries are one of the oldest static elements of the printed press. National dailies report on the death and the dates of funerals of public figures, scientists and politicians, meanwhile regional newspapers report on the death of well-known compatriots and friends from a smaller area. In the past years, writings were published about the shrinkage of dailies and the reducing number of copies on numerous surfaces, and this topic was concerned in several professional forums as well. At the same time, users of social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter etc.) are more and more open to show each and every moment of their lives to their friends, whether it is about a child’s birth, a holiday, the meal for lunch, or even about the death of a family member or a friend and the date of the funeral. In this study, I undertake the challenge to examine whether obituaries and funeral announcements are acceptable on the walls of social networking sites and how users feel about reading such news. This examination is based on the analysis of a questionnaire filled by users of these sites.
